Light bulbs

Lighting, next to temperature and humidity, is another important climate factor in the terrarium. Lighting should reflect both the day/night and the summer/winter cycle. Animals from the region around the equator require 12 hours of light every day all year round. Animals inhabiting regions around our own latitudes need 16 to 17 hours of light during summer and 8 to 9 hours during winter. Ideally the lighting is also used to control the temperature in the terrarium - this is what the animals are used to from their natural habitat. The UV-B spectrum of light has a special significance. Reptiles, growing tortoises and lizards in particular require the UV-B spectrum to be able to form vitamin D3 in their skin. What are known as rachitic diseases would develop without this vitamin or UV-B radiation. The HOBBY brand includes one of the most extensive ranges of lighting equipment in the industry.
